Contributors to Knowing

We wish every one of our contributors had claimed her name as a writer, bought the domain, JaneDoeWriter.com, or JaneDoeAuthor.com or WriterJaneDoe.com if not JaneDoe.com, and had at least a bio and some contact information, but ideally a simple blog. (If you would like help in getting your domain and setting up your first website, we offer that service. Email anora@whenwomenwaken.org.)

Some of these links go to Facebook Pages, occasionally a Twitter account, and for some we do not yet have a good landing page. We do hoe this makes it easier for you to learn more about these creative women.

A.J. Huffman‘s poetry, fiction, haiku, and photography is widely published. Author of several chapbooks, she lives in Florida, USA, and is the founder of Kind of a Hurricane Press.

Ada Wiam lives in India where she spends most of her time reading, writing and dreaming and crafting new worlds with new characters. She believes spinning stories is like a magic. 

Aine Greaney is an award winning, transatlantic writer, born and raised in County Mayo, Ireland, and now living on Boston’s North Shore in the US. She is the author of four books and leads workshops.

Alice Mason is an artist from Norfolk UK, who has been enchanted by wanderlust throughout her life and who sees herself a dream-weaver, using her art to create her own utopia. She lives in the U.K.

Allyson Whipple lives in Austin, Texas, USA, where she teaches, is a leader in the poetry society and director of the Austin Feminist Poetry Festival.

Amiel Landor is a North Carolina (USA) based writer and poet who holds a Master’s degree in Holistic Psychology and is an intuitive life coach.

Amy Kierce is freelance writer and editor who writes a column on writing, and a personal blog, and is working on a novel.

Anora Sutherlandis a writer and poet who grew up overseas in the Middle East and spent years studying East Asia. She lives and works in North Carolina (USA).

Bekah Steimel is an internationally published poet living in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, where she is  working on a novella.

BethAnne Kapansky is a clinical psychologist enjoying life from her tiny corner of Anchorage, Alaska, USA. She writes personal essays, composes quirky poetry, and creates whimsical art.

Beverly Ash Gilbert is a photographer, bead, fiber and mixed media artist who teaches workshops across the US. She has written many colorful books including the innovative color wheel: Eye For Color.

Carol Smallwood, Michigan, USA, is the author of many books, including Women on Poetry: Writing, Revising, Publishing and Teaching. Her work is on Poets & Writers Magazine’s Best Books for Writers.

Catherine Bates is a linguist, registered nurse and artist living in Rhode Island, where she creates original, carved porcelain icons, jewelry and functional pottery and is working on her first book.

Christine Elizabeth Murray is a stone-cutter and poet who lives in Ireland. She is the author of chapbooks and two  book-length poems. She has a blog dedicated to highlighting women writers from around the globe.

Crystal McGaha lives in Fernandina Beach, Florida, USA, where she is a college student and award winning martial artist, pursuing writing and a degree in alternative health.

Diane Z. DeBella is an author and speaker, and teaches at the University of Colorado in Boulder (USA) about women writers, women’s history and feminist issues. She published her memoir in 2013.

Diane Hall Glancy, a professor and poet of Cherokee and English/German descent, is a preeminent Native American voice, and recipient of the American Book Award, the Pushcart Prize, and the Capricorn Prize for Poetry.

Donna J. Dotson is a freelance writer living in North Carolina, USA, where she is a founding member of Women Writers of the Triad. She writes short, intense pieces of fiction or creative non-fiction, and poetry.

Genevieve Guedra  is a poet, avid poetry and fiction reader and a teacher of  English/American literature in France. She has been published in collaborative projects and is writing a novel about mental disorders.

Georgia Kolias of California, USA, holds an advanced degree in creative writing and cultivates the intersections of food, fertility, and culture in writing. She is pursuing publication for her first novel.

Gloria D. Gonsalves, originally from Tanzania, has lived in Ireland, and now resides in Germany where she enjoys writing poetry and tales for children and adults and supporting humanitarian-related projects.

Hannah Mackay lives in Manchester, UK with her partner and children. Her poetry unfolds from her healing practice as a shiatsu practitioner.

Holly Rose is a Canadian teacher, blogger and writer. She believes in the law of attraction and that having gratitude can give you anything your heart desires.

Indira Sadanandan was born in Kerala, India. She has done post graduate studies in English and Malayalam literature, and holds an advanced degree.

Jaki Shelton Greena published poet, is the first North Carolina Piedmont Laureate. She received the North Carolina Award for Literature, and is a 2014 North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame Inductee.

Janet Garber, an oft-published essayist, author, poet, yearns to return her focus on fiction. She works in New York City (USA) and is writing her novella when at home on the outskirts of the city.

Jeannie McGinnis is an American living in Northern England. She’s a writer, voice-over artist and a dabbler in acting. Her passion is working with women rescued from human trafficking as a caseworker.

Jenny Williams a North Carolina artist, began creating art with watercolors, but switched to fabric art when she discovered the joy of flowing paint onto silk. Her art quilts have been displayed nationally.

Jill A. Coyle lives in South Carolina (USA) and teaches English at the college level. She holds advanced degrees in the classics and English literature and writes poetry inspired by the beauty of the natural world.

Joanne Toner is a freelance writer in the UK, working on her creative writing Ph.D. as a playwright. She teaches, is editor of an online magazine, and has co-authored a children’s story.

Karen DeGroot Carter is a native of New York now living in Colorado. She is the author of  a novel which explores challenges faced by people of mixed-race heritage, a writer and copy editor.

Kavanaugh has moved 32 times and now lives in Chicago, Illinois (USA). She writes her truth in flash fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry and is participating in workshops and critique groups.

Kelley Harrell is a modern shaman in North Carolina, USA, who has written two books on shamanism, including one for teens. Her work is published in anthologies and journals.

Kerry Holjes is a book editor, poet and writer in North Carolina, USA with roots in Ireland, England, and Rhode Island. She is the managing editor of When Women Waken.

Leigh Chambers is a journalist and humanist celebrant who lives in Cambridge in the UK. She has recently finished a novel and presents a radio show on Cambridge 105FM about books and writing.

Lena Ray is writer of poetry, screenplays and contemporary fiction, currently lives in Prescott, AZ where she attends college and works part time.

Linda McCauley Freeman is a magazine columnist, and a freelance writer. She has been a poet-in-residence, is working on a novel in New York state (USA).

Maeve O’Sullivan is a media lecturer in Dublin, a member of haiku societies and an all-female spoken word group. Her work has been published in two books, a collection of haiku, and one of poetry.

Maria Sutherland is a young Chinese American girl living in Maryland, USA. She’s in eighth grade and loves animals and doing all kinds of creative arts.

Mariah Wheeler is a jewelry artist and founded the Joyful Jewel, a dynamic art gallery in central North Carolina, USA. Writing for fun, Mariah listens to the big and little knowings of the Muse.

Marie Mader is an artist and jewelry maker originally from Wisconsin and now in Florida. She has taught art, illustrated a cook book and loves doing digital painting.

Marina Sofia has found her way back to poetry after a long period in the wilderness. Now a resident in Geneva, Switzerland, her poetry has begun to be published in journals.

Mary Ann Bumbera lives on a farm in North Carolina and travels to Chicago for corporate work. The death of her beloved dog, Charlie, led to writing a spiritual memoir.

Mary Orovan is an American poet living in New York City. Her poetry has been published in a book, and her work has appeared in journals.

Miriam Foley is a journalist who writes creatively has published short stories in literary magazines. She is from London but currently lives in Madrid, Spain where she is working on her first novel.

Naomi Lynn Shaw was born in South African but lives in the UK. She who loves words and is fascinated by the impact they can have on one’s soul.

Nosipho Gumede is a young South African writer and engineer who washes coal during the day and writes poems whenever she can. In 2012, she won the National Poetry Slam and has been featured on TV.

Pamela Newham lives in Cape Town, South Africa, where she’s been a career journalist. Now focused on fiction writing, she is the author of three novels for young adults, and poetry that is widely published.

Pamela Taylor is a data guru by day and an accomplished poet by night in central North Carolina, USA. She has several advanced degrees and is a Cave Canem Fellow.

Sally Buckner has devoted her professional life to writing and teaching at the college level in North Carolina, USA. She is widely published as a poet and a reviewer and is the editor of two anthologies.

Sara Mansfield Taber is a writer, teacher and editor who lives in Maryland (USA). She is an award-winning author of several books including a memoir of her international childhood.

Sarah McTeer Ogburn, an artist living in North Carolina (USA) finds that working in mixed media gives her license to express her profound love of life and belief that nature is healing to the human soul.

Solene van der Wielen was born in the US of Belgian parents, has lived in France and is now studying  in the UK. She writes about cultural expectations on identity and mental health.

Sue Fulton is a graphic artist and photographer in North Carolina (USA) with a great love of the natural world. She recently completed research to find her birth parents and extended family.

Sylvia Freeman is a singer, composer, poet, artist and photographer from North Carolina, USA. She sings with fleur-de-lisa and is a yoga instructor.

Tanisha Jackland is a poet and multi-media artist living in the Emerald City in the US. She has been writing poetry for over 20 years, and in her downtime, she paints and creates poetry music videos. 

Victoria M Johnson lives in Los Gatos, California, USA. In addition to writing poetry, she is published in fiction and nonfiction, and also writes and directs short films and micro documentaries.

Zvezdana Rashkovich is a novelist, columnist and freelance writer who was born in the Balkans, raised in Africa and currently lives the expat life in Dubai which includes working on her second novel.
