Diane DeBella – Games

Simon sez
smile for the camera
with your dimpled fresh face,
pink bundle of joy
(Mother-May-I take
ten baby steps forward?)

Simon sez
smile for the camera
even when puberty hits and drains
your self-confidence
(five steps back)

Simon sez
smile for the camera
in your cap and gown,
college graduate—summa cum laude
(seven steps forward)

Simon sez
smile for the camera
in your glimmering gown of white
(five more steps forward—
or back—depending on your
point of view)

Simon sez
smile for the camera
cradling a newborn babe,
your own pink bundle of joy
(ten giant steps back in your career)

Simon sez
smile for the camera
while your family grows and
you do not
(no steps either way)

Simon sez
smile for the camera
as you age with grace
ignoring the gray
(ten steps if you have energy)

Simon sez
smile for the camera
while you watch your daughter play
the same game
(Mother-May-I take
ten baby steps forward?)

  1. When Women Waken says:

What a delightful portrayal of a woman’s life cycle, set before a camera lens with changing steps at each stage. – I enjoyed reading it. — Anora McGaha
