Pam Newham – Revelation

My mother made me bring you home for tea.
“Be nice to her,” she said.
“Her mommy passed away, you know.”
So you came and to be honest
all I have left is a memory of pale eyes
and tight white pigtails with bows.
Once you came for tea and I was nice.
Just an afternoon and a girl
with pigtails and pale eyes
and that moment when I knew
mothers die.

Very nice! The brevity of this piece adds to the power of the voice. I was a little stunned when I read those final words, but almost instantly realized that it could never have been anything else. Thank you for sharing.
